MOOSE FACTS

Moose can run at speeds up to 35 mph.

Moose shed their antlers every year after the rut, usually mid to late winter.

Cow moose drive their yearlings off in the spring shortly before giving birth to a new calf.

Bull moose are less fit to survive winter weather/cold than cows or calves, as they deplete much of their reserve during rut.

Spooky Bog "The Moose With The Pointy Hoof"

We looked long and hard to find a vehicle that would "work" for us and our venture. Finally we purchased the Voyager and all seemed right with the world. And since it was going to be used for our moose looking trips, we have been breaking it in, so to speak. Making sure it will do. It has lived up to our expectations for the most part, but then there was an unexpected development!

On several occasions on our way home from evening excursions to moose country, along the same stretch of road, I would hear a small scratch- like noise in my door (the driver's door...front left). I didn't mention it to Lee because, well he has a lot to deal with, putting up with me anyway. I didn't want him to think I was nuts too! But finally I mentioned to him jokingly one afternoon that I thought the car was haunted. He just rolled his eyes at me and said "yup". (That's called humoring the old woman...it's easier than asking questions.)

A few days later when friends were moose looking with me we were swapping stories and I mentioned to them the van might be haunted. (JOKINGLY! of course) They offered several possible explanations any or all of which might be plausible. That was probably about two or three weeks ago and although we have traveled the aforementioned road several more times, the noise didn't return so I dismissed it.

Then, this last week while Leon and I were out (yes, I go moose looking every chance I get!) we stopped and had Northburgers at the Andover General Store. Someone asked if we lived around there and I explained about my obsession with looking for moose. The burgers and coffee were wonderful. After paying we walked out, putting our jackets on as we climbed into the van. We were adjusting the seat belts when the dome lights came on. "What did you do?" I asked Leon, who looked at me bewildered and said "Me? I thought you turned them on." At that moment the trunk popped open and I said "What the heck?" THEN the lights flashed on/off, on/off and the locks went up and down. I looked at Leon "I know I SAID I thought the van was haunted, but this is ridiculous! Where are my keys?" (I wanted to leave...it really caught me off guard.) Then I realized what had happened and started laughing as I unbuckled my seat belt. I was still laughing as I walked back into the store saying "OK, which one of you has my keys?" (I had put them down on the counter when we were paying and these funny guys had cleverly figured out how to let me know where they were.)

I told them, "You really messed with me...I've been telling people my van is haunted because every time I drive a certain stretch of road I hear a scratching noise in my door..." One of the customers, who was in the middle of all this, gestured with his hand, curved in a claw-like fashion and said (in a voice that would have done Dracula proud) "That's the moose with the pointy hoof...."

"RIGHT!" I nodded and laughed again on the way out as he called after me..."Watch out for the moose with the pointy hoof!!"
